The ponds of the Taoyuan Main Canal serve critical functions such as water storage, drainage, flood detention, and ecological support. They also revitalize 22,000 hectares of farmland. For a century, this system has played a crucial role in sustaining agriculture, industrial and commercial development, and supporting the region's vital functions.

Pond No. 4-7 of the Taoyuan Main Canal has been in use for over 20 years. The existing lining had deteriorated, causing maintenance difficulties and water retention issues, which necessitated the current improvement project.

Main Works:
Pond revetment: 1,368 meters
1 water supply tower
1 sluice gate

Innovation, challenges and extendibility of the construction
  • Addressed the collapse of single-layer sloped stone masonry caused by wave erosion and biological activity.
  • Solved the challenges of a declining number of skilled stonemasons, the loss of robust masonry techniques, and the shortage of stone blocks.
  • The platform design aimed to reduce the risk of falls for patrol personnel or farmers operating water gates while creating habitats for plants and animals, balancing ecological, environmental, and safety needs.
  • The structure was strengthened with vertical and top beams and was lined with hollow bricks to enhance the stability.
  • In line with the government's resilience plan, the pond was dredged to increase water storage capacity, regulate water resources, and enhance regional flood detention capabilities in preparation for future extreme weather events.

Excellent performance and significant benefits of the construction
  • During construction, the project received an A-grade (84 points) evaluation from the Council of Agriculture's engineering inspection and was completed on time and to quality standards.
  • The use of hollow bricks and existing on-site stone materials achieved on-site earthwork balance during construction, meeting energy-saving and carbon reduction goals.
  • The design utilized the porous nature of hollow bricks and a two-layer slope approach to create environments for plant growth and animal habitats, addressing ecological, environmental conservation, and sustainable development needs while ensuring water safety.
  • In alignment with the government's sustainable water resources resilience plan, approximately 35,000 m³ of sediment was dredged and removed, increasing the pond's storage capacity by 20%. This ensures water availability during dry periods and addresses the increasingly scarce water resources and water shortage issues caused by climate change.
  • After improvement, the pond's water storage capacity reached 210,000 tons, with the ability to perform over five full water replacements annually, satisfying downstream irrigation needs and enhancing disaster prevention and flood detention functions.
